Well, we survived the crater, serengeti and selous

Waiting in Dars Es Salam in dayroom for late overnight flight to Amsterdam, one night there and flight home on Sunday

Found greater kudu and African painted dogs in selous

No more damage noticible to equipment

Probably no photos posted to forums until Tuesday at eariest

They do, but I still haven't met a ranger or walking guide who finds lions intimidating. Hippos, buffaloes, elephants, and "black" rhinos, though... The only encounter where I've heard a ranger shout "Run!" involved a black rhino.

So much for "whatever you do, don't run"

For the record: For 99.99% of encounters with big game the rule still holds. And in 100% of the encounters, do as the rangers say.
Lions

Intimidating

Perhaps not

But still potentially very dangerous ; )

We drove a long way from our camp - Rufiji River Camp

Most folks never found them

If they did, the dogs were resting in one spot, no movement

We found a group, resting, then we moved to a another group, first group joined second, vocalization and greeting behaviors, then group moved out in a slow run

We got very lucky.

You know, I've visited some 40 parks and reserves in 15 African countries - and I still haven't seen any painted dogs. I'm sorry, Allen, but we're not friends any more

Looking forward to seeing some images when you're home and rested

That they are. But also fairly predictable in their behaviour. If they have small cubs they are predictably more protective

we realize how lucky we were in seeing the animals we saw and what they were doing when we found them

we had good guides who know where to go and how to look for what we were seeking

along with good luck as well

lessons learned :

do research and use your resources

including those on the forums who have experience in the activities and the equipment

plan and replan

be adaptable once you get there

trust your guide and consider strongly the advice they give you, they are your expert in the area you are visiting

have fun, regardless of what you can photograph

remember put the camera (s) down, look around at all time and learn as you go about the cultures, the land and the animals

Top tip of the day - but your observations are all true.

I'm still more that a bit envious of that - but hey, one more reason to go back! As if there weren't enough reasons already

and you will enjoy Africa once again when you return

our first trip to Tanzania was in 2016

we arrived In Tanzania on July 21 and left on August 2 2019

went to Ngorongoro Crater Serena Lodge then Lemala Ewanjan tented camp in the Serengeti and then Rufiji River Camp tented camp in the Selous Game Reserve

this time we concentrated on what we really wanted and hoped to see if we could:

Black Rhino

saw one in the Crater and one in the Serengeti

Leopards closer than before

Saw 5, including a mother and one cub, all in the Serengeti

Cheetahs.

Quite a number, 7 in one day including a mother and two cubs feeding on a thomson gazelle and 4 brothers feeding on another thomson and two others on another day - all in the Serengeti

African Painted Dogs

Quite a number, including greeting ceremony between two groups, sounds of the dogs and them running all in the Selous Game Reserve

plus more including some surprises:

baby elephant chasing lion cubs

baby baboons riding on the bellies and the backs of the mothers

11 weeks, 3 days - and counting

Always exciting to see, even though when I do I get a sad feeling that we are among the last to see them in the wild

Hah, those cubs aren't still for long, are they

One of my favourites, and a good reason on its own to visit the great plains of East Africa.

Barely able to run straight, but aleady exploring its future dominance!

Too similar to ourselves But even baboons are cure when they're young.

The most important advice is wear a pithhelmet, otherwise you're not on safari.

not for me

1 cannot fold it so hard to transport from my home to Africa

2 possible problem:

" Controversy

The pith helmet was widely used by European colonial armies in Africa and Asia. As such, it is considered by some critics to be a symbol of colonialism.[31]

In 2018, First Lady Melania Trump received criticism for wearing an American fiber helmet (also known as an American pith helmet) during her trip to Kenya. Critics noted the helmet's frequent associations with European colonialism. . . . " - Pith helmet - Wikipedia

problem number 1 is the greatest concern for me
