Ah , my thought is that we learn just as much from our worst shots as we do our best ones, hopefully leading to more of the best ones in the future

ah,

Optimism lives

___________

that reminds me of a story

there is a glass containing beer on the bar

the optimist sees it as half full

the pessimist sees it as half empty

the Cub fan sees it and wonders when it will be knocked over

Safe travels! Have fun. Don't get too hung up on lens selection. Shoot plenty but still remember to experience things not just as a photographer - this trip is more than just an opportunity to take photos. Enjoy yourself!

News from the Serengeti

Despite the complete failure of the 150-450 yesterday

( it has come apart )

We are having a wonderful time

We did find black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater - rare

and again today in the Serengeti very rare

Looks like good photos but I can't really check now

Cannot upload photos now, will be doing that after 8/5

Lucky I did haul the 8 lenses and the converter, so the loss of the 150-450 isn't crippling

So far has used all but the 100mm

Biggest disappoint is haze caused by smoke from India and China

But not that much of a problem

Please keep thinking good thoughts

In 2 days will be heading to the Selous Game Reserve

And leave for Amsterdam 8/ 3

Sorry to hear about the 150-450! Can't be fun when on a trip like this... Good thing you're well prepared with backups and backups for backups

But hey, the experience is more important than the images anyway - at least in my opinion. Good to hear you're having a wonderful time, and I trust it's not at all a let-down compared to last time Looking forward to hearing how you find Selous!

My method:

1 take in image using eyes and store in brain

2 try getting photo

3 always look around

it is a mistake in translation

the dutch word " wide " was mistranslated to the english word" white "

the white rhino crops grasses and has a wide mouth

the upper lip of the black rhino has a hooked lip and browses

they are the same color - grey

Yep. I think the names "square lipped" and "hooked lipped" are far better and describe the most-easily distinguishing feature between the two.

If you encounter them on foot (you and the rhino both ) you will also know that if it charges you it is most likely a (male) black rhino You would also do well to remember that all trees, including thorn trees, are good climbing trees.

They do, but I still haven't met a ranger or walking guide who finds lions intimidating. Hippos, buffaloes, elephants, and "black" rhinos, though... The only encounter where I've heard a ranger shout "Run!" involved a black rhino.

So much for "whatever you do, don't run"

For the record: For 99.99% of encounters with big game the rule still holds. And in 100% of the encounters, do as the rangers say.
