I generally find that making sure the lens hood is on the lens does not get too dirty if at all

As to Lenspen, it works for awhile until the tip accumulates whatever grease, oil or grit. There are lots of people who swear off Lenspen for inadvertently scratching their lens/filters due to embedded grit on the tip.
Yeah, I scratched a two week old DA 18-250 with a two week old lens pen earlier this summer...F*%K! is what I said then (and again today more quietly when the ebay auction for it ended - ruins the value, scratches do.) Now the brush part of the pen lives in my pack to be used when the air-blower fails to remove debris (rare), and the rest of it including the contaminated felt pad has gone away.

The best thing I've found for cleaning lenses is a blue microfiber cloth made by some brand called Mr. Clean or something. It's a waffle-weave cloth - got a big, chunky texture.

It's the only thing I've found that actually lifts dirt and grease, rather than spread it around. That's without any cleaning fluid, at all. The ultra-fine weave specialist lens cleaning microfiber cloths sold in camera stores are nowhere near as good. You'll be scrubbing for days to remove grease with it - hell, you'll probably remove the SMC before you remove the grease with them.

Other things I've used include T-shirts, ties (both silk and synthetic) and various napkins.
