Macro setup using DFA 100mm, Raynox DCR-250 and AF160 FC Ring Flash

I am testing my new macro setup. Hopefully I can use it with insects since I had to get very close to take the pictures.

Try playing around with the balance and power settings on the flash, just for fun!

I am not a fan of ring flash, but to each his own. I hope this set-up works out for you.

Remember when shooting macro vibration is a huge bane. The longer the lens and attachments, the more chance for vibration.

Nice setup. Impressive detail on the pen and mechanical pencil tips.

Those are not tools. Those are the tip of a ball pen and the tip of a mechanical pencil with the graphite lead sticking out..

I did play around a bit. It is kind of difficult to get good exposure using the auto mode of the ring flash. My first few shots were over exposed. I had to decrease aperture (f22 to f32) a lot and set the flash compensation to -2.0EV on the camera settings. Also, tried taking a photo of a small spider near my house ceiling an was kind of difficult. Need to keep practicing.

I consider myself patient searcher/buyer... I searched for months and months for an affordable AF160FC, on September 2019, I was lucky enough to find one at KEH, they stated that is was in bargain condition, when it arrived I was surprised as it was in excellent condition (just missing the case) and I ended up paying less than half its normal selling price. Then, last week I ended paying only $18.00 for a Raynox DCR-250 that was on eBay as a bid (sells new for about $65). I think I indeed am very lucky (or maybe just too patient/cheap of a buyer).

At those magnifications depth of field is very narrow, reducing the aperture (higher f stop) will increase the depth of field but beyond f11-f16 diffraction becomes an issue resulting in lose of sharpness.

Focus stacking on static macro subjects is the best way to add depth of focus when lens depth of field is insufficient. Easy to do in Photoshop if you don’t have or want to go with separate stacking software.
