So just to be clear on how to meter is this the following method:

First to adjust the EV Compensation to +1 for your hand, 0 for a blue sky or gray road. Then to point your camera at the chosen meter subject, then press AE-L for Exposure Locking. Compose and then shoot? I think before I was metering first, pressing AE-L, then EV compensating in that order. Does the order matter?

Finally if I recall my one experience using my hand the image ended up being overexposed. Perhaps distance to the lens makes an affect?

Set EV comp before you meter. That ensures the cam takes the EV into consideration when metering.

As for the example in the first post, the high contrast between the bright sky and the darker foreground precludes having all the detail from both in one capture. HDR is warranted in those conditions. Otherwise, lighting needs to be more even - often requiring more thought and even different timing before taking the shot.

Or you could just "chimp"it!

Heck, isn't that what the rear LCD was invented for - especially with the histogram and the over/under blinkies enabled!

Yes, although digital photography doesn't warrant taking the knowledge away from getting exposure right the first time.

Once the basic principles are understood then you as the operator know when to bias the exposure, and how to meter.

I wish I could do that on my Spotmatic ... I guess back in the day you had to get it right first time ... if you didn't ... you learnt quick smart as film and developing was not cheap (still isn't really).
