Images in a bubble

So, after the freezing rain today I thought I'd try to get one of those pics where the background shows up in a bubble or ice blob. I tried. but no go! I have a K3ii and 100mm macro lens. I put a CU3 macro filter on the end, but still no joy, any help would be appreciated, hopefully the ice will stick around so I can try again tomorrow.

1) Look at the blob with the naked eye. If the you can't see the background clearly through the blob, the blob is too rough or aspherical to form an image.
2) Try different distances to the blob
3) Use manual focus to more slowly control things.
