Cheap magnifying lenses give crappy results. If you want to get sharp photos, you shall use achromats containing at least 2 elements. There is a useful list here: Index.

I own some excellent achromats (Nikon 5T & 6T, Raynox DCR, Sigma life size converter, Lomo AL-4) and some bad ones (Marumi DHG, Olympus MCON 35).
