shaper with shake reduction on tripod?

the first image is with shape reduction off, the second is with shake reduction on, both taken on tripod, 2 second timer, and release cord. is it normal to have shake reduction set on and have a sharper image? everyone always tells me to turn it off like it's a plague with put on a tripod ..... my only guess is my tripod sucks and shakes just a tad, enough that shake reduction actually is a benefit

or am i just blind and they're both the same hehehe

Shake reduction automatically turns of when you use the 2 second timer.

Gary is right so both shots are with SR off. My guess is the first shot is showing tripod vibration.

Have you adjusted the tension on the legs, I had similar issues until I did that.

IMO, if you are going to use a 2 second timer, it's better not to bother with the release cord. The reason for this is that a) if you hold on to the cord, you can introduce some movement. and b) if you put the cord down, you introduce movement (I can't do it fast enough for the vibration to reduce in the tripod).

On the other hand, an infra-red shutter release works well with the 2 second timer - better than depressing the button yourself.

Also - the two photos look to be very different from each other - not only in terms of blur. While both have a similar global contrast, the second one is darker across the frame. More importantly, it looks like the first one suffers from a lens-related blur. Most likely, it is shot wide open - which is less sharp than optimal.

ok so then, wtf?!?! am i just someone who can't take sharp images or what? i tried again and 3 images (shake reduction/no timer, shake reduction/2 second timer, 2 second timer) seem to look the same (i won't post all 3), but is it just me or is it still not sharp enough?

What aperture were you using? If you have a shallow DOF, that might account for it.

Yeah that should have been fine.
Have you checked the printing on the lens, maybe that's blurred.

Didn't you hear? I read it just yesterday on RH's blog that the lettering on Pentax lenses is 15% blurrier than that of the competition's. Just one more reason to not buy Pentax!

Can you explain to me what and how did you do to ease the shake?

The centre column should turn. My two have stickers on them showing which way to increase the tension on the legs.
