I have a Ricoh R8 - mainly for when I don't know I'm going to take a picture of something.

This thread is of interest to me as I'm eyeing the k2000. I have a plethora of film camera's and my only digital is a P&S. I know am wishing for a DSLR. At one time I was considering the D40. The K2000 seems like a good candidate for a travelling camera.

For those with a k10/k20 and a k100/k200. Would you go out and buy a K2000 as a backup body and a travelling camera?

I take my K100D along any time I travel (car or plane), usually with the 18-55 kit and my Pm 70-300 zoom. I often take my trusty little Canon A80 P&S along too. I take my monopod along when flying, if driving I'll toss the tripod in the trunk as well. Other lenses come along or not depending on luggage space and purpose of the trip (fun vs work).

Well as a backup I am not sure... I mean that will largely depend on what you do.

But as a travel camera, I am going to buy one myself I think. The shutter feel is much improved over the DS I use now.
It will go very nicely with the limited primes as a compact travel kit.

The Panasonic LX3 looked promising when it was announced, and the review posted to dpreview was quite enthusiastic. Just your basic P&S, but especially good high ISO performance, nice controls, RAW capability, and a *fast* lens (f/2.0 - 2.8) with super-wide angle capability (equivalent of 16mm on APS-C, if I'm figuring right). Main drawback is a very limited telephoto range - only the equivalent of 40 on APS-C. But with all those other positives, I could see this being a great camera to have.
Agreed, Marc. This does look like an interesting camera, and I've noticed that the usual places are selling it for less than $400 (Buydig, etc).

I use one of my older K10s with a Sigma 20-200 lens. No batt grip. Pretty compact and light. Not the best lens, but more than enough for snap shooting pics of the family without getting pro set up out with flashes, several lens, battery grip. Just makes life easier to have an all in one lens. I'm not changing lens, which helps with dust, and worrying about all the parts that aren't attached to the camrea.

I got the K200 specifically for traveling, along with the kit lens 18-55II and a 50-200ED BUT those will be replaced with the faster weather protected/sealed lenses for Christmas

If my wife goes along I use both my istDL and my K100D. If it's just me then I use just the K100D. Travel lenses include the DA 18-55 mm, DA 50-200 mm, My trusty M 50mm f1.7 and always my Zenitar 16mm f2.8.

I think everyone should bring their DSLR's everywhere. As the world gets used to seeing more and more people with big cameras, it's better for everyone.

As I don't mind looking like a tourist, as that's what I am anyway in those locales, I've always been accustomed to having a big camera with me. I also carry a pocket p&s for those times/places when a DSLR might not be welcome.

After you have toted a Magnavox VHS tape deck with a corded Panasonic video camera (about the size of a 3lb ham) thru Disneyworld and thru the Canadian Rockies, a DLSR is hardly noticeable.

I don't like carrying bags though. So one lens usually. If it's jacket weather, a second one in the pockets.

One of the three...

I travel by motorcycle, so my previous plan was to keep my Olympus Stylus in my jacket all the time. It is adequate, but just.

Longer trips, or with more luggage, I'd take my Canon S5 IS, which has sufficient manual control to produce much better photos.

Now that I have the K200D, I will likely sell both the Canon and the Olympus and purchase a higher-quality ultracompact, such as a Canon SD870IS.

Then I will only take the K200D when I have the hard luggage on one of the bikes. Looking into a way to mount a pelican case on my dirt bike.

Now that I have my DA* 50-135, my traveling kit will probably consist of:

- K10D
- DA* 50-135
- FA 43mm Ltd
- FA* 24mm

Going forward, I might try to find a wide zoom (either the 12-24 or the 16-45 F4 range) which means only 3 lenses (2 zooms, 1 prime) that I might take traveling.
