I just didn't know what to say........

So, I assisted a friend at a wedding today. He brought his wife along, who
is also accomplished in this field.
Officially, I was the light donkey.
Anyway, we got done what we needed the Genies for, so I had moved them
aside, and was in the process of packing up. At some point, another wedding
had started shooting in the location we had just vacated. I was gathering
equipment, when I noticed the other photographer was doing her wedding with
a Canon Rebel of some sort (which isn't germane, but I like to take cheap
shots when I can), what looked like the starter zoom and the built in flash
for illumination.
Yes folks, that's right, the built in flash.
The gathering process took me into close proximity to a couple of the
groomsmen from the other wedding. One of them asked me why we had so much
equipment onsite (a couple of D300s, the Genies, 2 Metz handlemounts,
several lenses, 3 people, you get the picture), when their photographer was
just using the camera and built in flash.

I just didn't know what to say........

I probably stood there looking at him for five seconds before I mustered
this gem:
"I'm sure your pictures will be just fine".

Nice story, another smart answer might have been to respond with "Oh, we're being paid".

Have to agree with others. Great way to save yourself in a professional way. but I have to agree with Gary, I would have said Well aaaaaaa we were being paid, and then said I'm sure your pictures will turn out just fine. snickered and walked away.
Of course this is why I don't do weddings, that and the fact I'm allergic to that word. LOL

I was in the same situation a month ago. My group was done and there were 2 other wedding parties still shooting in the park. I had an hour to kill and stayed to watch for 10 minutes. One guy knew what he was doing. This gal was out of her league. I took a quick shot with the 300mm. She had no control. All the family and friends were milling around taking shots. Leaning over her shoulder etc. She was also using a pop up flash. Like you I was spotted packing up a couple of light stands and related gear. I'm just glad no one asked me the same question. I don't think I would have had a better response.

Not being mean; just that's it's really tough shooting weddings, even for seasoned pros. So a little humorous sarcasm is good for the soul. Speaking for myself that is

Supposing it was your wedding being photographed and you weren't happy with the pictures?
Another way of looking at it, if they haven't got lights and all the bells and whistles, it'll be a waste of time suing them.

That is a common sight these days. I have seen people charging 200 dollars for cut and paste photoshop job that I can do it with my achilles tendon. Funny world we live in.

I'd love to see you taking a shot with your achilles tendon James. Of course you would have to use auto focus because I'm sure your neck isn't that long.

ROTFLMAO!

You could have added "We just don't know how to do it with less gear".

There are a lot of people running around shooting weddings with pop up flash. Worse I saw was a person who booked to shoot the wedding without owning the dslr. So they borrowed one from a friend! Never shot it before in their life. Would have hated to be those poor people.
thanks
barondla

People are amazed when I tell them they shouldn't shoot a wedding without a back up camera!

Someone asked me why all the fuss... a p&s would do the job well, too...

I was not "the wedding photographer", but had still brought along my k10d w/grip and more than three lenses.

Much to my discomfort, the batteries did not work well after walking some minutes throught the rain. There I stood, changing battery after battery without taking a shot.

While the Ixuses and HP's were doing their jobs very well...
