What is a 'pan glass'in cinematography (or photography in general)?

I don't know where to post this and it isn't necessarily related to Pentax itself, but I've read the following intriguing remark by the British cinematographer Harvey Harrison:
Apparently his 'most prized piece of equipment remains a pan glass he has had for 40 years I still use a B&W one. I find it much easier to judge contrast with it, he says.'
Harvey Harrison BSC - British Cinematographer
Does somebody know what is meant by this? A lense of some kind?

Found this online:

"Panchromatic Viewing Filter
It is a dark green filter that you view your scene through when shooting in Black and White. It enables you to judge the effect of the scene brightnesses without the distraction of colour. It effectively renders the scene as it would appear on panchromatic black and white film."

Thanks,

That would be nice to have a lot of times for color still photography as well.

Thanks,
O right! Actually, this is a coincidence, because I was looking the other day if such a thing existed and here it is. ;-)

Indeed, and if I'm not mistaken it seems to exist for color photography as well?

... and basically this seems to be a sturdy version of a Kodak Wratten #90 filter as used by Ansel Adams.
