Depends on what sort of shot you are after.

I recently took a few close up images of my nieces eyes over the weekend ... using my Tamron 90mm Macro lens ... nothing having to get too close to them ... I could still focus nicely on the eye an get reasonably sharp images ... and still fill the frame. Will post some up later when i get a chance to upload them.

But then you can really bring out the eyes in a nice portrait like Wheatfield has shown ... without even getting close. Also PP does help to really bring them out.
