History of the Label "Pentax"

The Name Pentax was not created by Asahi Optical!

In Germany, there were many camera-producing facilities, most of them in and around Dresden/Sachsen/Saxony.

One of them was Zeiss-Ikon Dresden, in Relationship with Carl Zeiss Jena Optical.

In the 50┤s Zeiss Ikon created the name Pentax = Pentaprisma Contax

Then, the name were selled to Asahi Optical.

The cameras were always Asahi Pentax for most of the world. Honeywell was the U.S. distributor up until the mid-1970s (can't remember the year) and Heiland was a Honeywell subsidiary. Part of the distribution deal was permission to re-brand the cameras; first as Heiland and then as Honeywell. This re-branding was also reflected in model names beginning with "H".
