Good for her (and you).

I'm wondering if there are enough children of forum members who are starting to use a camera to create a Junior section.
Actually, why not make one and see who shows up? As much as I did learn from 'old fogeys' when I was that age, we kind of had our own space, too. That was pretty valuable, as well. Figuring stuff out the hard way, even. Even lock most of us older folks and our now-stodgy opinions out, ..there's always the rest of the forum. Not to say, 'Let's make a kiddie pool,' but, hey, when I was a kid, we didn't have *constant* access to 'age and experience' (and jadedness) ...and I think that was an OK experience.

I'm not under 16 anymore now, but when I started, I was well below it (12). I am now 18, and sporting a K10D, still the very same camera I used since I started .

Well I believe that I got my Pentax when I was 16. But is was so many years ago I just can't remember. Now I'm a whole 18 years old.
That's the problem when you get older. Your memory starts to go.

I started with a Pentax (S1a) when I was 18. But that was back in 1968. Hope that counts.

Ya I thought I was young for this and im 29. Figured younger kids just used there phones, most think theyre phones take better pics anyway. I started in highschool with a k1000 and developed my own film there. Only digital camera I every had before the k20 was a kodak m853 p&s. Now im just trying to get someone else my age to shot with me. A guy I work with had a d40 he used but then dropped it in ocean so on my own again.

I'm much older now, but I started using my Dad's K1000 when I was 15, and bought my own when I graduated from high school.

So this kinda covers a topic I was going to question anyways.

Do the latest generation of photographers actually learn to use cameras or do they just point them and let the camera do all the work now?

If I hand you a K1000 with an M50 F1.4 lens and a roll of 200 film could you come back with good pictures? (Or set a digital camera to M and disable AF & shake reduction and set the ISO manually with no chimping after each shot allowed)

I find people DO get better pictures with their camera phones or point and shoots, but in general it is because they are too stupid to utilize the full ability of an SLR or DSLR camera.

So I wonder with those that actually pursue photography as a hobby, how much do you learn to use the manual functions of the camera (and the reasons behind any action), and how much do you just let it do all the work.
I'm seeing a frustrating number of older (but not vision impaired yet) photographers that know damn well how to use a real camera whining about their autofocus and other things they never needed in the first place.

I think its a real hindrance to the latest generation that cameras do pretty much everything but point the lens at something since laziness is built into humans and it so easy to get off on the wrong foot if the camera is built for it.
I had to learn on a camera where shake reduction was learning to hold your butt still and auto focus was a super wide angle lens set to infinity.

For the record I hate anything with the word auto because the camera always has different ideas than I do on what sort of picture I am trying to get and it takes me less time to do it myself than to override what it plans to do (set AF points ect.)
Oh dear, that did turn into a bit of a soap box rant didn't it?
