My macro lens is an M 100/4. I use it hand held most of the time to catch bugs. I set the camera to AF.S, the aperture to around f/11, ISO 400, which gives me a shutter speed of about 1/400 in bright sun. I use the catch-in-focus method. Hold the shutter button and sloooowwwwlllllyyy approach the subject. The camera will fire when focus is detected. Example shot here from my gallery entries. As best as I could find (thanks, Marc Sabbatella) this is a Least Skipper Butterfly. I is on my wife's pansies. We had a real invasion of these last fall. These creatures look almost like moths, but are not. They seem to be some sort of critter that is half way between a butterfly and a moth. Fascinating, in any event. I had fun chasing them around.
