I need some input!! Should I

Ok I am looking to add to (or change) my camera system. I shoot Sony a700 right now have some fine glass (6) and enjoy the results I get, But, and yes I have thought about the A900 I have some issues with it, What I am looking at though is a K20d or the K7. My thoughts are with the available glass for the Pentax it would seem the switch would be less costly and don't think I would be going backwards in quality. I shoot some action but mostly stills and wanting to get into portraits.
I may sell the A700 not sure just yet. I do have a question as to the longevity or just where Pentax is headed, I know with the release of the K7 this could be the start of something new, I just hope it is not the last breath of life either..
Your input is much appreciated
Kevin

My thoughts...

A700 is a good camera, beats Pentax in autofocus performance, but a K20D will perform far better at higher ISO and produce generally better images.

A900 is an amazing piece of gear, but higher ISO is so-so. Still, for landscapes/portraits, I cannot imagine a better camera at this point.

Better to consider the K-7 for action, faster AF, if you're an AF person that is.

There is ample glassware for the Pentax cams.
Not just Pentax-branded, but Sigma, Tamron, and a gamut of MF lenses with K and M42 mounts.
Given the big effort put into making the K-7 I don't think Pentax's future is bleak.
Sure, the A900's cool too, though...

Don't forget to check out the 'lens reviews' of this forum. It will give you an idea of the range of the available Pentax (and third-party, for K mount) glass.

No one here can predict what the future holds for Pentax or for any company, especially in the current economic crisis. As for where they are headed, jump on board and find out because I'm sure Hoya/Pentax has a few more ideas lurking around.

Pentax is a good system to stick to. It has affordable range of lenses to buy and play with.

Why do you want to change? Knowing the "why" could help figure out if you'd win or loose in the change.

I agree. you make it very clear that you are currently happy with the photos you are getting from your sony kit, so what is the reason(s) for wanting to switch to pentax? ill be more than happy to recommend pentax and help you decide on the best course of action, but I need more info. no need to make any future regrettable decisions.

why I am considering

The factor in changing systems is one the lens availability on the Pentax side, the feature set on a Pentax maybe the best in the market.
Main reason glass!
Happy Shooting

You could get the K-7 and some glass and then decide if you want to sell the Sony or keep both systems. Keep in mind that permanency is only a figment of reality. Pentax as a brand could easily outlast Sony in 35mm. The only reason it currently exists is they bought the defunct Minolta plant and Minolta 35mm line from Minolta.

lots of nice glass for pentax especially if you like primes. not only pentax glass but also voigtlander and zeiss glass. sony has won some tests for AF speed, the pentax is known to be slow. but the k7 is likely a lot better, as the km was a lot better already. sony doesnt seem to have so good high iso performance, even the a900 because they went all for resolution there. its a hell of a camera tho (a900), great price (compare to nikon d3x), fantastic VF. altho I find sony glass quite expensive. maybe thats their strategy

K-7 with Sigma 24 f/1.8 and Pentax DA* 55 or Sigma 50 f/1.4 HSM sounds like a good kit. Based on the posts on this forum, K-7 seems to have a very accurate AF, which would obviously be very important when shooting wide open with those lenses.
