Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG Macro HSM Issues

I recently bought a Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG Macro HSM lens (less than 2 weeks ago) and yesterday I went out shooting for about 5 hours and the automatic focusing just up and stopped. It was fine at first then just started to get slower and slower to the point that it wouldn't focus. My question is can heat cause issues? Cause after I aimed the air conditioning at it in the car for 20 minutes it started working again and now it is fine. Should I return it? The temperature was around 28-29DegC but I also wasn't in the sun the whole time either.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums Doczi!
I haven't had any experiences of that sort with my lenses yet (not the same 70-300mm) and all I can say is, when in doubt, return it if it still has warranty.
'Coz you will always be thinking about that even after it had worked fine.
Don't wait for the warranty to expire as you would regret it then.
It might be a sign that something is already going wrong with it..it may not happen completely yet but then again why let that worry be hanging over your head when you can get a new one.
Others might give their experiences about this but, I'm sure you would be a lot-lot happier with a new one that you know would work heat or no heat.

I have the same lens. It should not have been a problem in this kind of temperature. I had mine in my hot truck for hours (well in excess of 40c in there), took it out and used it right away for dozen of images without any issues. I am sure you have a problem and should return it.

Mine was slow once right after I took it out of my car after sitting in there baking all day with outside air temps in the mid 90's F high for the day. Was at least 20 deg warmer inside the car. After cooling to outside temps around 90 deg F for an evening hike, it seemed to speed up.

I had a similar issue and wiping off the contacts on both the lens and the body took care of the issue. I guess some residue/dust came between the contacts. Hope that takes care of it.

Thanks for the replys, I exchanged it and got another one and it is working perfect. I talked to the store that I bought it from and They sent everyone they knew emails to see if heat was ever an issue and nobody had an answer. But they did say I was the second customer in a week that had the same problem.

I'm sure you did BUT....
Check you battery level. lens in AF mode like the Sigma 70-200mm can eat up alot of juice.
