Infrared with K7

Hi all, I had frustrating results with IR on the K10D. I just stepped up to the K7 and was wondering if anyone has had any success shooting IR with the K7? Settings?

Thanks,

Josh

Frustrating in what sense? Too long of an exposure time, not enough IR sensitivity?

I'm curious what your experience has been with the K7 and IR. I'm assuming that there's a new kind of IR filter for this camera. Not sure what the frequency response would be.

Frustrated, in that nothing came out well. I attribute that to lack of ir sensitivity on the k10.

Haven't had a chance to do any experimenting on the k7 yet. Maybe this weekend..............if I can find the filter.

Perhaps if you told us your settings, exposure times and posted some examples, some solutions might be forthcoming.

Pentax K7 can provide very good IR results!

But first of all, not every filter is good.
I have tried many of them, for example Cokin 007 is absolutly not usable because of plenty of reflections.
Also some glass filters as Heliopan RG 645-715 are not good.
Good filters are starting at 720nm, like Hoya R72 or Kood R720.
I´m using Kood R720 on Sigma 10-20/4-5.6 EX DC.

Not every lens is good for IR. Many lenses are creating very bad reflections, for example Tokina 12-24, many Canon lenses.

Best IR Settings with K7:

1. RAW
2. Manual exposure - 20sec or 30s, f11
3. shoot under strong sunlight to obtain IR effect
4. manual focus to IR point on lens, if there is any

5. !!COVER viewfinder - this is very important becasue You will get reflections

I didn't find much difference in IR behaviour between the K10D and the K20D. And since the K-7 is using a very similar sensor to the K20D, I'm guessing there won't be much of a difference between the K20D and the K-7 either. That corresponds with the very useful settings provided by therion, which is more or less what I used on my K10D/K20D. I haven't used my K-7 yet for IR.

The models using the Sony 6MP sensor were much more sensitive in the IR and could be used at "normal" shutter speeds, but the K10D/K20D/K-7 can be used to achieve IR photography very well, albeit your options are limited by the long shutter speeds that are required...

As I have had K10D and now K-7, I can compare it´s IR capabilities. I can say K-7 is even better for IR with Kood R720 filter. IR effect is stronger.

Therion,
Thanks so much for the settings and feedback. I have the Hoya R72 filter that I've finally laid my hands on again, and will give some IR a try this week!

I'll post if anything turns out.
