A Little Chat with Pentax re: Nikon 1.1

It seems that the "Rumors" about an 18.7 mega pixel Nikon with a 1.1 sensor seem to be known to the people at Pentax. When I brought up the new Nikon they weren't at all surprised and said "Yes, a 1.1 sensor of 18.7 mega pixels..."

Take it for what ever that is worth. The implications could be interesting.

Ben

Yes very interesting - Pentax have almost no production FF lenses and none on the roadmap so what are the chances? None I would say!

OH MY F*CK!

Sorry. Haha.

A sensor like that in a Pentax body... mmm... chocolate goodness.

Well all the new Nikon lenses are DX (APS) cropped as well.

Conspiracy time: the delays in the DA* lenses are due to the fact that Pentax will indeed be releasing a 18.7mp 1.1 crop camera in the near future, and has halted production of the DA* line in order to tweak the designs to make them FF, D FA* lenses...

so how is this different from a 'medium format' digital camera?

isn't this in concept the same thing as the difference with a 35 mm slr and a 645 medium format?

what am I missing?

Personally I think Pentax would be better with the 1.5x and the Medium format for high end... Maybe in time a 1.3x crop.. But going FF would play havoc with their current lens line-up..

Of course if everyone else (other than Oly) went full frame on mid range DSLR then they would have no choice??

LOL. I doubt they could "tweak" a DA lens into an FA lens.

What I'd like to know is whether the 1.1x crop is enough for in-body shake reduction to work for full frame lenses. Pentax can't put a full-frame sensor in unless they build lenses w/ internal VR. Hope the DA* lenses come out so FA lenses drop in price ;-)

OR the DA* lenses are already FF capable, just a FF body would not have SR. Simple solution.

Personaly I would like to see a DA* lens hit the private market

I agree with joele and I don't see a reason for Pentax FF. The announcement of one would only confuse an average Joe who would probably wait to see what happens before buying any more lenses. Sensors are and will be getting better and better and I believe that within 2-3 years we'll have an aps-c sized sensors as good as todays FF ones.
For those that really need FF equivalent there is a 645D.

I couldnt care less about the sensor itself; its the FF viewfinder I lust for...

Even a 1.3 APS-H crop would make a big difference, IMO.

You can't beat the laws of physics. The more pixels you have, the less photons land in them, the less low-light sensitive the sensor is :-(
I would be happy w/ the previously rumored 1.25x crop 12mpix sensor w/ ISO6400 sensitivity and better dynamic range...

Yes, but we can find more and more clever things to do with them. In 2-3 years there won't be any revolutions, but I think it's reasonable to believe that leaps in technology will increase sensitivity by an order of magnitude or two in our lifetime. Perhaps even more as we get into quantum-level nanotech -- but that's really not in 2-3 years.
