And pretty much anything Garry Winogrand ever said.
What did he say (except from the one quote which was already posted)?

'If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough' -Robert Capa
It always appeared to me that this was very good advice for a war photographer like Capa or maybe documentary photographer but that this advice is often extended beyond its original context. I might be wrong and I don't want to dilute this very nice threads with fruitless discussions but since we had the "closer" theme a number of times now I felt I'd like to say that a) the message has been sent and b) it may not be a message that is a generally applicable as it is often purported to be.

EDIT: I just realised that the thread was about the best advice individuals received and that it in this light it makes sense to repeat an advice even if it appeared before. I wouldn't do that but I now see why some did it.

Now that has to be the best advice, ever.

My favorite quote: "Amateurs worry about cameras. Pros worry about lenses. Photographers worry about light."

My best advice: "Point the camera. Inhale. Press the shutter while exhaling."

My favorite concept: "Art does not require high resolution."

That's just wrong, ain't it? A good shot might be just a few steps away but the best?

hahaha I was at work and wrote it quickly. I think it was that the "best shot MAY be a few steps away."

Thanks for pointing that out

I interpreted that one as another play on the get closer saying?

I don't. I take "get closer" literally, but a "few steps away" might mean to step backward or to the side - the idea to try to find the most interesting perspective on the scene, which may or may not be achieved by getting closer.
