Best photo advice

Most of us have been told some piece of photography advice in our lives that has fundamentally changed the way that we shoot. I was just wondering what that one thing might be for all of you.

I had a teacher that told me:

"Fill the frame with a simple subject".

Granted this will likely be replaced over time by some other advice but for now, this is the one I try and keep in mind.

"Don't think about what should be in the frame so much as what should be left out"

"Concentrate on the picture taking and the creation of something meaningful, leave the technical aspects to fall into place in their own time."

Good idea BTW.

if you don't think a "Golden rule" applies, don't impose the rule on your shots.

As you go through you revolution in photography, you will find / hear / read many rules. These rules are generally pretty good but they are not absolute.

Braking rules, or more importantly knowing when the rules no longer apply is an important thing to learn.

Also, two really specific points no one seems to have listed
- read your camera manual, go out and shoot, then read the manual again, and again and again
- get and read one really good book on photographiuc techniques, go out and shoot trying each technique, and then read the book again, and again and agian.

My favorite that Grandpa Gus told me...

"It's all about the lighting stupid" and "Dont wait for perfect light, and then leave something ugly in the background"

He was a gentle soul until that second six pack Kicked in!

Take the cap off the lens before you shoot.
