Aspect ratio & image viewing...

I keep looking for a way to view images larger than the K20's 2.7" LCD in the field so these tired old eyes can evaluate for composition, focus etc as they are taken ... and reshoot if necessary

In thinking about the new iPad I came up with a probably naive question: if the K20 generates a 3:2- ratio image (4672x3104) , and the iPad has a screen that's app. 4:3 ratio (1024-by-768) , is the image compressed and cropped to fit in the iPad (or any other similar screen)? If so, does the IQ suffer in the process to negate the value of using the iPad, or Netbook or some such device?

The image from your camera is scaled to fit every screen it is displayed on simply because there are no monitors that are 4672 pixels across. You will never get a one-to-one representation on any computer screen.

That said, a bigger screen is going to be better for previewing. And the iPad looks like it will be a wonderful device for phtographers to preview photos, or perhaps even for tethered shooting. I've no idea what software will be available to manage photos, but I expect that void to be filled quickly.

How it displays the picture would be determined by the program you use to view it, not the screen. Just as on your desktop you should have a "fit to screen" display option that would give you a full width and height view with dead space at the top and bottom of the screen (or sides if viewing portrait orientation).
