Stereophotography

I remember when I was quite a bit younger looking at books that had sets of stero photographs in them that you could cross your eyes or stare at straight ahead to get the images to "pop." As I recall, Salvador Dali even did some paintings that had the same effect.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has insight into if this is possible to do with a single SLR and what techniques work best. It seems like there are a number of scenes that would lend themselves to this type of treatment.

Also, is there a particular viewer that can be used. I can see these images fairly easily, but my wife, stare as she might cannot get them to resolve.

YouTube - How to take stereoscopic 3d images with a simple digital camera?

Used in aerial photography for heighting of land and objects. Just search for stereoscope etc.
