New York trip- what to take?

Hello All,

I have a K2000 that I got for christmas. It's quite the upgrade from my K1000! The only good lens I have is a manual focus Sigma 70-210 macro zoom. I think I need another lens that'll do wider shots, either a 18-55 or maybe a 18-250. I'm definitely going to get another bag to carry around the city. Any suggestions would be helpful.

You definitely want something wider than a 70 and up...the kit lens will get you that and of course the other option you mentioned, the 18-250 will get you both width and reach. I use the 18-250 quite often when traveling and when I cant carry around a change of lenses. It does the job quite well and have never let me down. Good choice for an overall all solution. The 18-55 can be had for peanuts, if you don't want to spend the $$$ on the 18-250.

There are a million possible suggestions (well, almost). Let us know a few things to help us help you.

You mention the 18-250 super zoom. Does this indicate a preference for not changing lenses?

Will you need something fast for indoors?

What sort of shots do you like taking?

Do you have a budget?

When you say New York, do you mean NYC?

Thanks for the help. I'd rather not change lenses, I don't want to carry alot of equipment with me. I like indoor and outdoor shots, but I'll probably be taking a lot of outdoor.

In that case the superzoom is the ticket. Though if you want to do lots of cityscapes in narrow quarters the DA12-24mm would come in very handy.

You can never go too wide. Repeat, you can never go too wide.

Buy the 12-24, and sell it when you are done. Same for the 10-17, maybe.

I would not limit myself to a superzoom, because...

You can never go too wide ( especially in NYC where most everything is vertical and tight.).

...unless you want to shoot the interesting activity which may be occurring a block or two down, or a decent portrait with an interesting backdrop. I'd still stick with the 18-250 or your kit lens with the 70-210 you already have.

It would be helpful to know your budget...

I personally had the 18-55. The quality is very basic, not very good for night shot you'll probably do. I would recommand the 16-45 f4 or the 16-50 f2.8 witch I have (good copy). You already have a zoom why buying another one... The is also a 17-70 sigma or tamron that you should check.

I am going to NYC too, and I will bring: 16-50 f2.8, 50mm f1.4, and my tamron 70-300. Also I will have a cpl for my 16-50 in case I need to shoot behind a windows (helicopter)...

About the bag, I was looking at the lowe pro 202 sling bag but today I found the tenba small sling bag witch is better I think...usually I use the crumpler 5 millions dollars but I need to transport the monopod or a small tripod with me, so that why the sling bag comme in to use

Wide-angles are great for NYC. Back in the day, I brought along a SuperProgram with the K 15mm and A 35-105mm, and that combo worked very well.

I guess for digital that would be something closer to 10mm and 50-135mm.

Don't forget that there are some interesting creative possibilities with a longer lens. While it can be used to pull distant objects closer, it can also be used to foreshorten or compress a scene. These aren't New York, but this should give you an idea:

You can probably get some interesting shots pointing a telephoto down 5th Avenue, or Park Avenue, or down Broadway....

I've never had a lens as wide as an 18 or a 25. I'm thinking I'll get better shots out of the 18-55. I'm going to the local camera shop today to see what they have.

Hum, I agree with the other posters. Wider is better in NYC.
You said you did not want to changes lenses, I guess you'll be better off with a 18-55, 18-250 or if you are buying something new: 16-45, 16-50 or 12-24.

It really doesn't matter at all.

It's NYC, and if you think you need to change lenses for a shot, just turn around for a better shot and you won't have to.

I'll never understand folks who want a full frame shot of the Statue of Liberty, for example, when every a- hole on earth has already done that shot perfectly.

So my advice is a nifty fifty, and something wide.

There is no use for something above 135 in NYC.
