I believe Biro is alluding to when Hoya acquired Pentax mainly for the medical equipment department, which put the imaging department on a relatively lower priority level after the buyout.

I was at a official Ricoh/Pentax presentation earlier today in Montreal and the presenter told me 2012 would be a big year for Pentax with new cameras and lenses. He mentioned the 400mm and the K-3...

EDIT: Oh and he said that it is very unlikely that Pentax would release a FF camera in the next 2-3 years.

UdonUdon: Ricoh is buying only the camera part - there isn't any "medical division" which could have a higher priority.

Well that is good news (leaving out the FF mentioning, but that is okay for me at the time).

I'm excited about it!

I for one am really excited about this transition for pentax. Ricoh just released the A12 module for the GXR making leica glass possible without having to own a leica camera... On a point and shoot! I think that move forecasts a bright future for pentax. As a brand, I think Pentax is not interested in "copying" canikon. Ricoh is clearly not interested in it either. Because of the mount, Pentax sits astride two worlds of consumers, those who want "current" lenses and those who are interested in making use of older glass. I think Ricoh's move with the A12 perfectly lines up with that reality. 2012 is going to be exciting! Start saving! Or selling... or taking out more credit cards. (Got to keep that economy going...)

I'm hoping for good things to come from Ricoh and Pentax. We live in an uncertain period of time. Historic brand names are part of our culture. Every time one of them fades away a part of us dies with it. Our ongoing relationships with historic brands helps to disperse the uncertainty that knaws at us from all sides.

I really would like to see more weather sealed lenses, but new lens types and new cameras in the following years will still be a big plus.

Well, of course. The comparison between the two parent companies just makes a good reference point for gauging how much the Pentax imaging brand will expand over the next few years since the Hoya-Pentax imaging department made significant advancements despite being the secondary Pentax department. Now that Pentax imaging has become a primary concern, it will be very exciting to see what Pentax Ricoh has in store for the market.

I think this is very important. Having a good start and make enough sales in the coming 15 months is important. I'm in for K-3 and lenses is a bit of difficult the coming year (unless there will be that DA*135-270mm/f2.8).

the important thing is that pentax ricoh, keep the "philosophy", which costrusce SLR cameras, both color photos, for image management.

I think he was contrasting it with Hoya's reason for buying Pentax, which was for the medical imaging division. The camera business was just a sideline they didn't really want and had no intention of growing. In hindsight they were just keeping it viable for a quick sale.

Ricoh on the other hand bought it for the cameras.

There's almost no downside to the acquisition. I expect exciting things.

Yes, I've made a mistake reading his post as a question and not a statement. My apologies.
