No, because it says Mid Telephoto.

It makes perfect sense to call it a mid telephoto with the currently available range of Pentax DSLRs.

Labels like "normal", "short telephot", etc. only make sense with respect to sensor size. It would be misleading to call the 50/1.8 a "normal" lens in the absence of any camera on which it provides a "normal" AOV.

This absolutely does not preclude a future FF camera.

This is probably a nice lens, but at $250 it's overpriced. Pentax is missing a cheap "nifty fifty" like other brands have. The Canon 50mm F/1.8 EF lens can be had for $120 new. That's less than half this price
Well, given the huge market Canon and Nikon already has... If demand for this lens increases then Pentax has to up the supply also. If that happens, this lens will go really cheap soon.

That's less than half this price. One can get a used FA 50mm F/1.4 for about $250. This may be a fine lens, but IMO, not what Pentax needed right now. More experienced Pentaxians in need of a fast 50 have already bought a used F or FA lens or gone third party. This should have been a lens to lure new buyers in. And with the high price tag, that's less likely.
Well, I would hope for a little better build quality than the Canon 50 f1.8. I don't know if you have handled it, but it is incredibly flimsy. I can't imagine it standing up to normal every day wear and tear.

Still, I think the street price will end up being more like 190 to 200 dollars. Not a whole lot different than the Nikon 50 f1.8G, for what that's worth.

No worries, on PENTAX Digital Camera Lens Lineup it states 'standard lens'

Awesome! That's basically the FF camera announcement we've been waiting for so long.

FWIW, the FA 50/1.4 has been called a "normal" lens forever on the Pentax website although that hadn't made much sense anymore for years.

I'm thinking this is just a cheap alternative to the faster full frame FA 50 1.4 which I think will hang around for later full frame usage along with the 31, 43, and 77. I think the updated FA zooms won't show up again until its time for the FF body to be announced. Hopefully they won't include quite so many junk lenses as the last set. And I agree this new lens will be much cheaper before very long.

This is a good marketing move since the FA 50 1.4 is too expensive for many users though its actually a very good deal.
I personally consider it rather useless in a DA though as the 50mm focal length is too narrow on apsc for me to ever get used to for a walk around lens. I really only use primes for their much faster speeds and generally higher image quality, but even if I only had an APSC camera with the kit lens and wanted something faster this wouldn't be my first choice since I would get more use out of the slightly slower and wider DA primes that give the same field of view as my old A50 1.4 used on my film cameras.

Wow it has 52mm diaphragm blades, that has to be good! or a misprint.
I'm sure they will get that fixed soon. At least the filter size isn't seven or nine, right?

edit - oh the lens aperture ring is seven.. it's all here somewhere, it's kind of an anagram.

it must be substantially better than some of the great pentax manual focus 50mm lenses for me to consider buying one. to me, too many lenses overlap this focal length

Why on earth do Pentax make these plastic mounths?
It cant be that expensive to use some kind of metal.

Dear Pentax, saving money on the mounth is a wrong idea.
