PENTAX Debuts Retro Design Camera Featuring Fast F1.8-2.5 Lens, 4X Zoom and Classical

News update from the official Pentax website:

Denver, CO — PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION has introduced the MX-1, an advanced digital compact camera whose craft design and vintage lines appeal to a wide variety of photo enthusiasts. It’s fast F1.8-2.5 lens produces sharp and crisp imagery in a variety of settings and the camera’s 1/1.7 inch, 12.0 effective megapixel backlit CMOS sensor renders impressive low-light performance.

Encased in brass covers with an ergonomically-pleasing, texturized grip, the MX-1’s body is a tactile experience. The brass panels are cool to the touch and its high-end composition feels substantial in the hand, enabling simple and intuitive handling. Thanks to its beautiful styling and premium materials, the MX-1 develops a stunning patina impressing a history on the camera with each use....

Now this seems more like a Ricoh initiative. The only question now is can it top the Fuji X10? Though I bet this little guy can. Oh, and brass parts - meant to age beautifully?

Well, sensor is smaller than the x10 and it doesn't seem to have a viewfinder (nor hotshoe for EVF).

I really like it's look though, especially because of that texturized body. The lens looks well specc'ed, and the rest of the features look outstanding for something out of Pentax (heh heh)

Ah yes... Missing hotshoe and VF indeed. Starts at $499 though, for a P&S.

if not the fujix10, could this be the answer to canon's G line and nikon's P (?)?

I'd say that's more accurate - the G12 competitor

I don't believe it does, as it seems screwed into the body.

Camera looks great but the omission of a hot shoe would seem to put it at a disadvantage compared to other cameras in its class.

That is the ONE thing that will keep me from buying this camera. Most P&S cameras don't need it, but a compact aimed at advanced users absolutely MUST have some way to connect external lighting. Now if it has wireless built in, THAT would be a reason to buy it over the competition.

IMHO, not even close.

It doesn't matter how pretty it is. If it does not have a hotshoe and a viewfinder (doesn't need to be optical), it's not for me.

I realize the G12's viewfinder is not the best, but it's usable.

I was there Saturday p.m. Got to handle the 645D and even the MX-1. They had a ton of stuff really inexpensive: K200d, K20d, K-x, K-r, K5, K-01 and most lenses except 540mm including DA* and Limiteds. Me? I bought a K5 for $512, a DA 18-135mm for $319.50 and a K-r/DA L 18-55 kit for $224.10. I was tempted to buy a 12-24. They had stacks of them for ~$625 and would have discounted my entire purchase by 10%, but I'd spent too much already (according to my wife). The cameras were NIB. The 18-135 was 'reconditioned'. FYI the sales receipt states "No warranty; no returns".
