number 14.... love the response. Canon had the opposite reply, and it shows in their lack of innovation.

I watched the interview on the link !

VERY interesting to see that the 645Z has had a very good response and that demand has caused a delivery date of 2 weeks. Hopefully there's something to be learned here from Pentax that when they release a 35mm DSLR, they're likely to again enjoy a surge in demand. Perhaps they delayed the 35mm so it doesn't steal the thunder from the 645Z.

In spite of the global decline in the economy, and decline in camera sales, AND the pricing war rebates, Pentax is increasing market share. Where's the doom and gloom here !

If anything, the canikony are suffering and may have to cut segments from their line-ups. They've simply got too many products, and too much artificial product segmentation - Lens backward compatibility is the biggest problem. Hopefully Pentax will have a "DX" mode on any future 35mm DSLR to give backwards compatibility - which was a mistake of Nikon with the 2 entry level models, and the EFS mount.

The FF question has been answered.

"Yes they want it, but right now the economy sucks."

#15. Can we expect to see the 645Z's convenient tilting display to make its way onto a Pentax K-mount camera?
I think it's a very nice suggestion, because the 645Z tilting LCD, as you know, is weather-sealed. This was one of the difficult engineering barriers that we have solved. So this is a good chance to expand this technology to adapt to other models.

#16. In the past year, numerous Limited lenses were re-launched with the Pentax HD coating. Do you have plans to update the DA* lineup as well?
Yeah, we do, step-by-step.
it's about time they updated the aging DA* lenses.

This got me a little confused:

#9. For the first time ever, there are 5 different DSLRs in the current Pentax lineup. Do you plan to maintain such a wide offering, or are some of the current cameras (such as the K-500 and K-50) too similar to each other?

From the Q-S1 we started the so-called “innovation line”, which is on top of our core line like the K-3 and K-50's. So, we will now have two parallel lines, one to attract the Pentax core fans, and we want to change and continue the innovation lines to attract new generations of customers. So in that sense, our product assortment will get wider, but we will look at the positioning product-by-product, and thus control the product assortment.
is he saying parallel lines e.g. "entry level vs enthusiast" or two entirely different lines with their own levels/categories?

I took it to mean two lines of cameras. aka the K50 and K-s1 could be of similar price but appeal to different audiences

That possibly and the need to revamp the FA or design entirely new lenses for a FF as well as revamping the DA* as well. Also more entry level cameras are sold than FF a year, so one has to improve entry level offerings before the "next top model" is introduced :-P

If nothing else, this interview shows Ricoh has a plan and a strategy for its place in the market. They see the big two are resting on their laurels - leaving room for Pentax, Sony, Fuji and even Samsung to gain entry. This must be closely managed of course, but they seem to be doing their R&D with an eye to some specific strategies.
