Certainly a great news and a good sign!

I still believe "seeing is believing" in many consumer decisions. Having a real showroom in city like Paris not only provide potential buyers the opportunity to compare, but also shown Pentax is serious about reaching out to the market.

This is interesting from a couple of viewpoints, obviously including the concept itself. More interesting is the choice of Paris for the launch. Paris is the number one international tourist destination (or was, when I last looked). The actual location of the store isn't an area I'm overly familiar with, but as it's placed between Gare de l'Ouest and Place de la Republique it could be moderately well-positioned. Not everything can be next to Galleries Lafayette, or on the Champs Élysées, but perhaps our French members can comment. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

PS – what is the monster lens on the bottom shelf of the Professional section? It looks like a 6x7 body is attached to it, so I imagine it's a legacy lens, which is an odd choice for inclusion with the 645Z.

It is interesting that Ricoh/Pentax just does this without any publicity. Maybe it is just a test with no expansion plans. I hope that is wrong. It would be nice to have that kind of presence in other major cities.

There's also a gold LX in the next case to the left - third shelf up from bottom - so there must be a 'historical products' bent to the in-store displays.

Yes, I saw the gold LX, and that's in the Pentax History display. This other group seems to have spilled over into the adjoining display, unless of course there's a digital 6x7 in the works…

Interesting.

Here is the 'Before' view of the store. The old name - Solvotex - seems uncannily similar to Pentax, so you can see why it was a natural for a Pentax store to sprout there

.

Handily, the Pentax store is directly opposite a nice little hotel too - the Hôtel Albouy, for any visiting camera shoppers.

I remember [from 15 years ago] the République area as an enjoyable locale to visit.

I went there the day following its opening and had a nice chat with the manager. Knowledgeable and friendly guy.

As described, the store itself has a section with all the new models for consumers (compacts), advanced amateurs (K) and pros (medium format film & digital), another historical section with all the models to date (how did I not know that a gunmetal LX existed?), another with "action oriented" models, one with binoculars, and a small section with some 2nd-hand products.

They even have the blinged out K-m Swarovski special.

You really can try out everything, and they sell stuff, so finally no more special orders from shops who barely know the brand is still in business.

Also, I might want to hold on a little further to my K-5 till next year when... cough hint wink nudge etc

All in all, I had a big grin from ear to ear the entire time.

Also, the store is located near Place de la Republique, which is a huge crossroad. By public transport you can pick 5 different metro lines, or countless busses, so no excuses.
As a matter of fact, south of that is the well-known Bvd Beaumarchais, which is THE camera street in Paris. The Pentax store is not exactly in the same spot (just north of it) but not too far away either. I say, it might not be near Galeries Lafayette but it probably makes more sense to have located it where it is.

Was that a lucky find, or did you have notice? Either way, it's nice to have a Forum member on the spot!

Interesting that they're still selling medium format film gear, especially outside Japan. I guess that explains the mystery lens/body at the bottom of the Professional display.

Avert your eyes! One for the Middle Eastern or Far Eastern visitors, I guess.

It seems all the good recent rumours and hints are coming from Europe, not Japan or the US.

That's encouraging. I'd forgotten about Bvd Beaumarchais.

Very short notice. The day before I was at "Le Salon de la Photo" (Paris photo trade fair), first stop was obviously the Ricoh/Pentax stand and while playing with the 645Z they told me they were gonna open a dedicated Pentax store later that day
That said, the manager of the store said they had done some promotion on French forums.

Btw, compared to last time, this year's Salon makes the return of the Pentax logo. It was featured a little more prominently and everywhere on gadgets and such. Last year all pens and bags were solely stamped Ricoh whereas now I have a pen which is marked both, as well as a lanyard which features Pentax 4 times and Ricoh 2. Also the bags they gave out were paper ones with Pentax Pro Center logos on them (last year they were canvas ones, but solely stamped Ricoh). People working the stand also had shirts with lots of Pentax on it.

Some of the 645 gear/accessories are still shared between the two systems, so there's a reason. OTOH the humongous lens at the bottom is attached to a 6x7 and I doubt it's on sale.

The word is, Russian customers seem to favour it

Keyword: rumours. But the manager was the first to say it's much needed, it's about time and there's really no excuse not to have it in the lineup, so they're aware. And Ricoh has the money to make it happen, so just sit tight.
