The sensor in the EP-1 is not the reason it's important. Its importance is that it's a completely new type of camera; the very first of its kind, with compact camera size and dslr performance. It's like a point & shoot because it uses an electronic shutter, no mirror and no optical viewfinder. It's like a dslr because it uses the same 4/3 sensor as found in Olympus dslr's and allows interchangeable lens changes like a dslr.

The poll is to determine the most important camera of the year. The Pen-1 is a clunker in terms of features and handling, but as a true revolution in design its importance dwarfs evolutionary features of the K-7, a lower priced Sony full-frame, etc. I firmly believe that all manufacturers will follow this EVIL recipe and a whole new niche will follow. (EVIL = Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lenses).
Yeah some companies will follow it but I don't think it will replace DSLR's for another 11-18 years or maybe not at all, because the sensor is smaller. Especially with full frames that will be used for professional photography.

I think most people who own dslrs are no professional and just want better picture quality at the smallest package possible. If the micro 4/3rds evolve further I believe it may eventually replace dslrs as the 'camera for the enthusiastic mass', or even replace P&S if it got cheap enough.

The sensor doesn't have to be smaller. Micro 4/3 uses a smaller sensor, because it's an open system designed for a more compact size. but an EVIL camera could use a regular sized APS-C sensor or even full-frame sensor. Samsung has hinted they will release an EVIL with the 14.6 MP sensor used in the K20D/GX-20. The significant part of EVIL is that the viewfinder and shutter are electronic and interchangeable lenses are supported. Sensor size only matters if the camera is M4/3.

Gary, I don't quite get your point. You wrote "People will be voting on what they think they know." Based on this logic the only people who could vote are the ones who own or have owned or used extensively all the mentioned cameras. Not very realistic. On the other hand, while one does not necessary have 1st hand experience on a certain camera, reading reviews and specs can give a fairly reasonable understanding if a certain camera is good or not, or if it is revolutionary or not.
Ok, The people who vote in this poll are going to be in a relatively few categories.
One group are the people who own the camera, they are mostly going to vote for the one that they own because of vanity and ego.
Another group are the fanboys, they are going to vote for a camera made by their favourite manufacturer.
Another group will be the ones who have read all the reviews and checked all the forums and they are going to vote based on what they have deduced (these are primarily the ones who 'think they know' but every category does to one extent or another IMO).
Another group will be the ones who vote with the crowd, they're not necessarily fan boys, they'll just vote for their brand because it gives them a sense of belonging.
There may even be a group who actually do know their stuff.
There's probably other groups but I hope you're getting my point.

Now ask yourself "What is the point of this Poll and Who Benefits?

I think the point of the poll is to generate publicity for Adorama and increase traffic to their site and hopefully get a few more sales.

Mr JCPentax is doing his company man part by starting this thread but Pentax won't really benefit from it, he's just being a good boy for a big customer. Pentax may benefit in some small way if a Pentax camera wins but in the present sales period I expect that most sales will be of the KX and they will be bought by people moving up from P&S and probably from Amazon.

Ok, did my best to keep Pentax in the public eye, but my heart wanted to vote for that Leica. I love the look and feel of 35mm Leicas, I would hope that the digital versions retain that.

Kind of makes the poll pointless then.
As your later analysis makes it pretty obvious, the poll was pointless to begin with, independently of whether people just use it to express brand loyality or not.

Because of the different various motivations and general lack of a basis to make an informed decision, the poll won't provide any conclusive result, except perhaps for a "fuzzy" popularity ranking.

It just makes for one more piece of information that can't be trusted when researching a purchase.
The fact that the piece of information cannot be trusted is not the fault of the poster, though, but the fault of the people who started it.

Seems to me that Pentax shot themselves in the foot by bringing out a better camera at half the price.
Why? I didn't get that.
Perhaps you need some time off from the forum?
Your tone changed from "British humour" to "being grumpy" recently, or am I wrong? All the best.

You're wrong, I just find some things annoying, pointless polls and fanboys being two of those things.

And I think General Talk has given me PTSD.
