too bad about the other boats being where they are in the first one, or that would be hands down the winner.

Agreed. The first gives enough perspective, but the other boats sorta confuse the issue. So, the second, in my mind, is the best of the three.

Agree, the second shot is the best: clear, dynamic, great colour.

I actually like the first one the most, as it actually gives the feeling of "boat race." If you could somehow clone out the boat in the far background, that would really make the first my favorite. Even still, one may be able to imagine it's a referee's boat or something.

The second one's composition leaves something to be desired and the third has a boat going in the opposite direction, which seems confusing to the central idea of a race.
