Which of these two do you think is the better picture?

The first is far better, as there's not as much there to distract you. However, what this photo needs is stronger colors. The composition and the bokeh in the first are fine, although I'm not sure how pleasing the shape of the stalk really is. With stronger colors, though, this wouldn't be a bad photo at all!

I find that in both, I feel that the lighting is a bit dark. It leaves the colours a little drab. There is a lack of highlight in your shots.

I have the same plant and have many photos of the very same flower.
For a suggestion, try it with a bit of back lighting and see how you go with it.
Excuse if I am appearing to take a bit of liberty but here is an example of the flower with a bit more highlight, hope you don't mind.
