Nice flowers and nice composition.
I think the focus is just a tad off though.
Is that the K smc 55 1.8 lens you used?
I think maybe you need to use a smaller aperture to get a bet more Depth of Field.
F1.8 gives no DOF to speak of at all.

Nice try nevertheless. Close up shots of flowers are certainly not the easiest subject.

Good starts here.
I agree with Bruce given the shallow depth of field you used with not enough regard for highlighting your intended subject matter in the images.
Too small and lacking compositional impact overall.
Keep at it, and stop down quite a bit when coming in close to your subjects.

Thank you, Bruce and Ash. I kept thinking really shallow DOF would be a better look. I see your point and will try for more. It's great to get some suggestions such as these.
Yes, it was K SMC 55mm F1.8.

I like #3, best.
Those guys in #1 are some kind of teeny tiny.
Though capture.
All could use a bit more DOF.

Thin DoF is effective in some circumstances - it's experience and wisdom that tells you as the photographer when it's appropriate to utilise it.

Indeed, more practice is required. I'll go shoot more and report back after a while. Thanks for great tip guys ( time and time again.)

#1(top left) - too much uniteresting space on the right. bottom petal competes with COI (Centre of Interest). I would do just close up of main petal with some DOF (depth of Field) experiments.

#2 - i would turn camer more to the left since yellow like maples disturbs petal pattern.

#3 - too chaotic composition. COI is in the middle i guess and front flower competes with COI. Furthermore other flowers disturb COI as well. either DOF blur or change composition

#4 - I assume COI is in the middle right. low contrast. COI disappers with similar color of bush. close up would be better.

I always use simplicity and art of substraction. flower must have soul and must speak. otherwsie, i don't even bother to assemble photo equipment.

few examples of my first flowers. JPEGs are rubbish, but it may be enough for some inspiration despite they are not best.

study pictures of pros for inspiration. find flowers and do some experimenting. you have got DSLR. even with 4GB memory card, you can take about 150 pictures with Pentax K-7 RAW. so you can learn.
