Welcome to the forum.

You got some good soft directional lighting in the first shot, but unfortunately all of them are out of focus. I like the idea of the last photo, but the light's not falling on the right places and the framing is quite ordinary.

Your sister obviously loves that little piggy bank...

I like #4 the best, but they all have awkward cropping and/or subject placement.

You had some good ideas but I agree with the above. I think #4 is the best of the bunch. It is actually quite a nice portrait but even it is slightly out of focus. Are you trying to focus manually or letting the camera do it? If the camera is new to you, try making sure the auto focus and shake reduction features are turned on and your shutter speeds are above 1/60. The Kx should be able to give you more sharpness than that.

In general the idea is very nice, there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of light though. I won't get into too much detail, but if you watch the shadows on most of these pictures, they sort of take away from the main subject (your sister). Shadow can be worked into the picture, but you have to play with it more.

That said, I actually like #2 best, in terms of posing, mood and composition, even after what I said about there being too much shadow

Use center point, then focus-recompose. When shooting people I actually find the Auto 11 to be quite accurate. Remember not to change distance (reposition your body) once focus is achieved.

My preference is photo 4. You might try cropping from the right, moving far enough to the left so as to eliminate the dark vertical bar that is to the left of the reddish door.
