What about a Cokin or Lee graduated ND filter turned to cover the area that is bright. That way you can get more detail out of the shadows without blowing the highlights.

Thanks for the suggestion and link, r0ckstarr. I wished for a graduated filter when I was there, but don't have one, and wondered if it could work for that particular situation. It would have been worth a try.
