My 2 sons
Lens: 28mm Tak Camera: K7 Photo Location: Home ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F11

I had posted these on another forum, but got next to no comments. Not sure if they are that bad, or if I just lucked out and didn't get any comments.

I was practicing with off camera flash, so comments / tips are definitely appreciated.

1. My eldest son. Slightly missed focus on the face, seems to be more on his hands.

2. Other son. I like this one, but may be a bit tight.

Good job with the composition, but:

1. The colors seem a bit off, especially in the sky. The sky should have a richer blue, IMO, and here, it's washed out almost as if the photo were overexposed.
2. The faces are soft in both photos, but especially in the first. Facial sharpness is key in portraits!
3. There is too little contrast between the background and the foreground. I think that it would have been much better had the backgrounds been OOF.

3/5

Thanks for the input Adam. It's good to hear what the problems are, otherwise you don't know what to improve on.

I'm not sure why the faces were not that sharp, as with that lens, my DOF should have been deep enough to cover it. I took another shot later with my 100mm, and DOF would have been shallower, but it's nice & sharp. Maybe my 28mm just isn't as sharp as it could be.

The clothing and bike look underexposed on the first shot. Some fill in flash from the on camera flash can help, so you're not opening exposure up too much to let the sky burn out.

They do seem to have some problems, as noted. I did a little work on the second one, still not perfect, but suits my eyes better.....Some sky color changes, a little more exposure, some spot lighting on the face with Light Machine.....and a little selective sharpening. For what it is, a snapshot, which is what most of us do...most of the time...I think it would print well for a memory shot. Practice makes perfect!......hasn't worked for me, but I keep trying!

Best Regards!
