Great shot. As with happens with most youth sports the most difficult thing to do is to separate the player from the background. Finding the best spot to shoot with the least distracting background is a big challenge. Keep on shooting

I remember my son's first pony start, what a sweet and intense time. And I was coaching the team, unable to setup a camera!

Re: the picture, you have some inherent challenges there. The light, plus you can only get so close with a 300mm lens, and your POV is limited as well.

Improvements:
-try to shoot at more wide open aperture to lessen the distracting background.
-in your cropping, either make it vertical, or position him more at the left of the frame so his movement goes across.
-try to get his face in the shot. Kids' faces are what really matter on solo shots.
-The shot is slightly overexposed. Use the recovery slider or something like it in software to cool down the highlights.
-Your white balance is off, it's too magenta; increase the green tinting, and slightly decrease the blue temperature.
-Seriously increase the sharpening.
