Some more Haley at Great Pond
Lens: 55 Camera: k7 Photo Location: Central Maine ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/250s Aperture: F8

Natural light, no reflectors or scrims--which I really need to use--or at least better compose for lighting, but I really like this shot, as Haley looks very natural and relaxed.

Her face is in shadow. The black dress in a pond in the woods just doesn't quite look natural to me. You've got a great model there, so keep at it!

Original Poster
Hi:

This was really my first outdoor/nature shoot with a model. I have done some shooting in our backyard and a couple locally near a river, but this is the first time I spent some time shooting at a lake. I need more experience making the background interesting, without taking away from the model. And, since I shoot alone usually, I have to be better with my composition so I do not get distracting shadows.

Haley is just under 18 so I wanted to try to have something that would look flattering, but still be appropriate for her age, but I recognize a different dress or pose may have worked.

Thanx so much.

Gregg

A reflector works well for outdoor shoots, adding light to models. Gold poster board on some kind of stand, or someone there who can hold it, is a cheap way to do it.

^^^ Yep, the shot could use some fill light. Either natural (reflector) or other (flash). Also, consider opening up your aperture so that the background does not draw your eye.
