Here's what I did... I didn't like the photo when I made the entire background black, or near black.

The only thing slightly jarring about this photo is now, her shoulders and head are "floating," so to speak. I don't know if I like it or not, but it depends on the mood you're lookng for. Otherwise, nice work.

Though, the original photo sort of had the same problem.

If you don't mind, may I edit this photo? I'm interested in what may come out of it.

Thanx for your thoughts. I had similar thoughts.

Yes, sure. Please feel free to adjust it. If you'd like a higher-rez image to manipulate, it is here: Ava is 8! album | m8o | Fotki.com, photo and video sharing made easy. (you need to click the "Get Original..." link when viewing an image (not the thumbnail page).

I tried to get rid of the distracting out of focus thing behind her head, then I did numerous other edits.

I also tried a crop. Here's the uncropped and my suggested crop.

Oh, I thought I replied already; oops!. I like the 1st one much better than the 2nd only because the cropped version got even softer than it was already.

I see you did a bit of dark fill on the hair too. Ya, makes sense that that's more necessary when you get rid of the bright area behind her head. I'd say you were more successful in dimming the BG than me. It started getting too 'fake' looking when I was using the selective edit brush in Lightroom so decided not to go darker. Did you use PS or Lightroom or something else?

I used Photoshop Elements 6 for all this. Just a lot of Levels Adjustment layers, four to be exact.

One to darken the background, lighten the face, lighten the shoulder, and darken the out of focus object behind her head.
