At a Garden
Lens: DA 18-55 Kit lens Camera: Samsung GX-20 Photo Location: Eastman Gardens ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Aperture: F8

Not sure about what kind of category this falls in, but here's my first go at a Critique section topic!

I don't mind if you don't like it at all, or if the reviews are scalding, but I do want truth. I want to improve.

Minor processing involved. Decreased exposure by 0.5, did some other things to bring up the shadows, and then used a Photoshop filter to correct the lens distortion at 24mm focal length as well as perspective distortion. Final was a crop to square.

I respect the attempt to provide a foliage frame for the arch. But I think if your subject was indeed the arch itself, then it is just too small in the frame to provide much success. If I were "doing the arch" I would probably position myself closer to the astrolabe in the center of the courtyard and shoot the arch over top of or through it. Also, waiting for a more dramatic sky may be another option.

I get the frame in the frame concept you attempted here, but indeed that leaves the subject too minute for the image. There is too much foreground cluttering the scene and taking away attention at the intended subject.

Maybe a titter crop would work, removing some of the empty space on the edges, but still preserving the dark leaves to emphasize the center.

I tried this, tell me what you think.

I think it does work better than the square crop.
