First photos with new lens (used)
Lens: 75-300 Tamron Camera: K-X Photo Location: Cyprus - Limassol ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Aperture: F5.6

Hello,

these are my first close up of animals out in the "wild" after 4 months with K-X! I just tried before with some dogs, cats and monkeys here and there

So what would you say? Any negative comments are welcome, since this is the point of critique!

I wasn't able to catch a bird flying though...

.

Looks like the harsh contrast is creating some purple fringing on these doves. You might try stopping down a stop or two and upping your ISO to compensate; otherwise, you'll be trying to remove that purple hue in PP.

Ok thanks for the tip...

But for which purple mark are you talking about? In order to understand better...

On the last picture, look at the right side of the dove, where it transitions from the light colors of the dove to the darker colors of the background, it is distinctly purple

They all look a dash purple hued to me in the harsh contrast areas.

Purple fringing is very difficult to fix in PP, and hence lenses exhibiting the phenomenon not being so popular (except the FA 77 ltd )

Yes, there are contrast issues as well, but there will be an element of contrast and texture washout from the IQ of the lens as well.

Doves do not look to be in sharp focus, For example in the first picture attention of the viewer goes to the wooden pole because that looks sharper.

I wouldn't give up on the lens....you just need to pick your circumstances and lighting more carefully. For ages, until I got my 50-500 Bigma, I used a Quantaray 70-300 and had many shots like you posted here. I also had many more that I was well pleased with. I learned to avoid overly bright situations, reduce exposure, and concentrate on getting as close as possible for sharpness. Purple fringing can be quickly removed in the modern programs available now.....so it is little problem, although the 70-300 is prone to PF with a bright background.
Here is one I like from the K10D and Quantaray 70-300....not near perfect, but still makes a nice print.
Keep experimenting, you will get more good ones than you think is possible with a little work!

Same lens.....70-300

Anything you find here shot at 300mm was with this lens...some decent ones ...some so-so....

I almost always use manual focus for wildlife and concentrate on the animal's eye for the focus point. AF doesn't know the difference between the light pole and the doves, or a branch or blade of grass, etc.
I wouldn't give up on the lens yet. All shots look overexposed to me. Try using spot metering and bracketing or underexpose by -1/3 increments. Fringing is a bigger problem with overexposure and low f-stops.
Looks like the light was harsh overhead (worst time to shoot), so you probably could have stopped down a bit and still had enough shutter speed.
