Juvenile Elk Sparring
Lens: Sigma 75-200mm at ~150mm Camera: Kx Photo Location: Northern Colorado ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/60s Aperture: F5.6

Just a shot taken today while out hiking. It was a little dark today, so I did some pp to brighten it.

BTW, this was just two of a herd over 100. You could hear the bull elks bugling all through the mountains.

Wow. That sure beats "another" bird shot from my backyard. What an opportuinity to shoot those guys going at it. Great capture.

Thanks! I reprocessed the image a little to get it a little sharper. I think the Pentax Kx that i use is set to soften the image slightly in its stock settings (which I have on right now), so I sharpened the image a little.

It really helps bring out the detail.

Any better?

This is one lovely photograph. I enjoy the interplay of colors between the elk and the grasses. I also like the contrast of their legs against everything around them. And it's just a neat scene!
Kudos!

#2 version is great. Fantastic shot, wouldn't be out of place in any magazine on nature.

The only thing missing for me is a sense of movement for them (e.g. a bit slower shutter speed to show them moving), but I understand that won't be easy to get (provided you likely hike without a tripod - and they might have easily been stationary at the end of the shot being in a clinch).

Thanks. Yeah, I tried to get a more "action" shot, but these guys were just sparring for fun and not moving very much. They were just grazing together, and when their heads got close to eachother, started pushing at eachother.

I'll probably go back up there this weekend and hike further in. I'd like to get some shots of bull elk sparring, they really get into it, sometimes standing on their hind legs and ramming eachother. Plus they have much more impressive racks.

Nice catch. If this was your worst day you would be a lucky person. Congrats.
