Paper in the Snow
Lens: DAL 55-200mm Camera: K-x Photo Location: Nebraska ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Aperture: F11

I was wondering if someone could give me a critique on this photo? Any tips on taking pictures of snow, where the snow is rendered *white* would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kent

For snow shots I would start at +2 EV (use the button labeled with +/-). You will have to check your camera manual to see exactly how to do it and see how far off you are. To get even closer, use spot meterng, manual exposure, and point the lens to the snow from the same angle you will be shooting. Set the exposure to 2 stops over exposed (slower shutter speed or lower aperture number).

The two stop suggestion is a starting point. It is usually close enough when you use RAW capture, but JPEG capture doesn't allow as much latitude.

As mentioned Kent, the camera's meter is averaging out the light intensity, but you want the snow to look more white than grey, so a boost in EV is warranted. Then review your histogram to see that the majority of the pixels register in the upper quarter. And again, shoot RAW and you have some leeway on saving highlight and shadow detail as required.

Good comments. Check out the Web for info. Snow shots are difficult -hit and miss. So bracket accordingly.
