I'm not sure the square crop is doing it for me. Since you are cutting off the signpost anyway, I'd play around a little with removing some of the vertical space with a landscape format. I also think the road is a little too dark.

Snow is tricky to shot.
I don't like that darkness, perhaps because
this recalls me somehow a "terror" atmosphere

Too me, it is too much contrast and too dark in the foreground. All of the important parts of the picture, the sign post and figure on the hill, have no detail or meaning.

Darken the sky and lighten the foreground and we may have something.

Just my 2 cents.

The silhouetting does appear to suit the dramatic sky in the B&W rendition, but indeed the important foreground is dark; also a more landscape orientation to the image may provide a more broad appreciation of the scene and have more to draw interest in the scene.
Boost the shadows and tone done the highlight details slightly, then bring back some of the cropped scene and you may have a winner.

Comments above notwithstanding I felt a sense of vertigo looking at this. Great perspective.

Good job on the new processing!

I think the original square crop with the latest processing would be my preference, but either way it much improved.

I think this is much better! I think it can be further improved by maintaining the aspect ratio and pulling that lower left corner up until that first fence post is gone. This will put the tree right at the spot where it will comply with the rule of thirds and it will further balance the image and make it even more pleasing.

Kind of like this. I hope you don't mind. I made it really small just to illustrate.

GregK8 - thanks a lot - indeed - I was doing different croppings (one version was even similar to yours), but now, when I see your crop, I like it pretty much - once again thank you very much!

This all works because of the rule of thirds. If you notice, the top of the road is about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom and 1/3 from the right. The tree is 1/3 from the left.

It also eliminated an element that was distracting in the first fence post. having it there draws your eye away from the main subject. I think it looks excellent now.

Um, break the rule of thirds just a little, so that the image is less static. Crop the left just a bit more. I think. Can you extend the upslope on the right further to have Width : Height around 160 to 100 (in the recrop below it's about 140 to 100) and the road more centered? Or, barring that, more of the road below? That would square the picture, but it would make the hump to be crossed more pronounced.

Alternately, keep something closer to the original proportions and have a more vertical scene. Something to really accent the hump.
