Bouquet of Cupcakes
Lens: Pentax M 50mm 1.4 Camera: k2000 Photo Location: NJ ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/45s Aperture: F4

Still trying to get the hang of DNG vs. JPEGs. The first one here is a DNG saves as JPEG in Picasa. The 2nd shot is converted using the RAW conversion in-camera. Just not sure which is better.

Both are fine for overall brightness, but flat. You need to bump the midtone contrast a bit with curves.

To my eyes, I like the second better. The colors are bolder!

Thanks. The first is more true to natural color, but I agree, it looks flat. I tried to process the second image to bring out the colors, but it just looks unnatural. I guess I'll just have to practice more on my processing skills... Unless anyone can use the forum tools to tell me what it should look like!

This just a quick curves adjustment with Faststone:

Something more or less like this should appeal to me; you may, of course, have a different opinion.

Best regards.

Lucy, these types of image could do with more extensive PP work (i.e. on the computer rather than through the camera). It may not need much, just a pass of levels (manually performed to bring out the brilliance in the highlights, balance out the colours and strengthen the shadow impact) and a pass of curves (for more contrast).

The photos aren't sharp and the focus is set in an unusual place. It's not in the center cupcake and both of them are a bit underexposed.
But, on the other hand,
beautifully decorated! I really like the color striping you did when you were piping.
