Another attempt
Lens: 55-300mm DAL Camera: Pentax K-x

Another attempt at shooting my beautiful feathered friend.
I used lightroom to fix a few curves I have no idea yet what i'm doing.
I was trying to capture his "excitement" his eyes pin when I talk to him.

Nice parrot portraits. For me the 4. is the best (although a bit underexposed). Try to put a piece of paper in front of the flash, to reduce the harsh shadows.

Nice! Got improvement there Lindsey. I second the shadows comment, however, I think it'd be better to move your position so you dont shoot the parrot with a grey/white wall as a background anyway. A little boring for a nature shot.

Move yourself to lend your parrot a more interesting background, larger aperture to blur the background and bring the parrot out of the photo, which at the same time eliminate shadows.

I think for a 'beginner' you're doing a fine job. What the curves adjustment does (basically) is adjust contrast. The more like an 'S' it looks like the more stark your contrast will be. In LR, you can also play with the blacks, fill light, and recovery sliders to make minor adjustments.

You can also play with the curves to come up with something completely crazy..

Thanks everyone! I will use all your suggestions. I want to move him outside for a better shot one day. The background of these pics were just the wall above his cage. He was on top of his cage. Need to wait for a nice warm day.

Cool bird. Would love to have one like that to practice shooting!
Good advice from others. Try some in natural light when you can!

Got him well here/
Front flash does flatten texture, but I think it's turned out well here.
Lots of bright colour and sharp detail.

thanks! I think these came out sharp and they are his natural color too, with my point and shoot camera the pictures would come out looking neon green.

lol his wings are clipped he cannot fly, he was abused before me and lived his entire life inside a cage. He was raised in a pet shop and lived his entire 4 years in that petshop never to be purchased or taken out of the cage. He did not even have a toy in his cage and his cage was filthy. The pet shop closed down and a local pet shop rescued him. I purchased him and have been in love ever since! Since he never came out of the cage before I got him so he never LEARNED to fly (fledged), even when his wings weren't clipped he would just fall to the ground like a brick but his wings are still clipped as a precaution. I do flap exercises with him to try and build his wing strength, he can now glide across the room but will usually crash into something instead of make a landing.

It's amazing how much birds will forgive. He was hand reared as a baby and remembers this, that is how I can handle and pet him today. He is a great bird and i'm so lucky to have him. I visited him at the pet shop almost every day for a month before I finally was surprised by my boyfriend who bought him as a gift for me. I am the only person this bird has ever let touch him.
