The Old Mill
Lens: DA 18-55mm Camera: Pentax K-x ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F3.5

I'm just getting back into photography from over 25 years ago. Finally picked up a DSLR and am learning all over again. Would love any and all input. Thanks.

I like it. Very good texture. Nice lighting. Wise choice of aperture to blur the background. I'd enjoy seeing additional photos from other angles.

It's a very nice abstract study. I particularly like the alternating patterns of black and rust in the cogs. If it were me I'd blur out or burn out the background altogether, making it 100% abstract, and just a tad sharper in the cogs.
Welcome back!

Nice photo. I like the composition, the subject reminds me of the ancient Mayans. The only thing I would say is it might have been better if the entire object was in view instead of the right side being cut off.

It doesn't look like you forgot very much.. Good exposure, well captured texture to the point where I want to rub my finger across the screen to see if I can feel it. Nicely done.

Did you take any other photos of the cogwheel? I ask because there is a lot of potential in this subject, but (IMHO) the approach of the photo you posted does not do it justice. And its orientation in the frame just seems a little "off" to me... maybe a vertical crop, or a closer zoom in order to highlight the shadow, shape, and texture more without giving away the "whole picture." Try an unusual angle, one that the eye would not normally see comfortably or naturally. Let the form of the light and shadow shape the image as much as the form of the physical object. That would add some intrigue to the shot, I think.

(Yikes! This is my first critique... I'm not comfortable doing it, hope this was actually useful feedback. It was honest, though, and well-intentioned.)
