I've spent about ten minutes looking at the first image, trying various crops, and I have to disagree with the consensus. Simon's cropped version demonstrates that the image needs a lot of empty negative space. It's about whiteness almost overwhelming the trees; a lot of negative space (a lot of whiteness) reinforces that impression. But it has to be lot of whiteness because we ordinarily ignore whiteness in b&w photographs. Cropped too tightly, it's just some dim trees. But Simon's image does support cloning out the telephone poles.
