This scene was hampered by the harsh lighting littering the semi-shaded area, causing too much shadow detail in the dark subjects. Not much you could have done about this.

Consider different perspectives and waiting for cloud cover if appropriate to make exposure more manageable througout the field.

Perhaps software would allow you to increase detail in mom's eyes.
