new advice please comparison
Lens: DA 18-55 Camera: Pentax K-M Photo Location: Scotland ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/15s Aperture: F22

Just picked up the camera again and first time posting so thought I would ask my peers for guidance and comments when I initially took this picture thought it would look good in B&W but now not so sure what do you prefer a or b.

Would welcome any comments if I have posted this in the wrong place please forgive thanks in anticipation Tel

I definitely prefer the horrid orange version: the color is striking and interesting. I think I'd crop it to 5:4, though, to get rid of some of the sky.

As above, but also straighten the horizon, don't overdo the sharpening and clone the dust spots out for a smoother result.

If only you'd walked forward a few paces, crouched down, and aimed your lens down a bit....

Initially I thought B, but now I'm thinking that a central square or large format ratio crop of A might be more interesting. This image isn't really about colours for me (just not enough), it's more about lines & geomitry. Needs a bit of PP love though to make the square crop of A pop, for example, seems to me that the lit side of the trenches in the foreground leading to the tree is more engaging on the colour version.

Thank you for the constructive comments.

Really appreciated, Strange to say that the ground really was almost that orange colour,
With regard to black and white what does one look for strong contrast vast tonal range seems I have so much to learn and so little time as the lady once said.

Not sure I know what PP love is does it mean Post processing? see I told you I am new.

Thank you all again for taking the time to help
